THE EDITORS CODE OF PRACTICE

The Editors code is a set of rules that newspaper and magazine industry members have to agree to accept, it is basically a set of rules which state that journalists cannot export the rights of an individual. The editors code does not address issues of taste and offence, it is designed to address the potentially competing rights of freedom of expression and other rights of individuals such as privacy. It is the responsibility of editors and publishers to apply the code to editorial material in both printed and online versions of their publications. IPSO claims to be an independent regulator of the newspaper and magazine industry and exists to promote and uphold the highest professional standards of journalism in the Uk, and to support members of the public in seeking redress where they believe that the Editors' code of Practice has been taken advantage of. The IPSO handles the complaints which civilians report against publications in cases where failings of production are systemically serious. IPSO also conducts its own investigations into editorial standards and compliance. It undertakes the distributed monitoring work, including by requiring publications to submit annual compliance reports. IPSO has necessary power to require the publication of prominent corrections and critical adjudications in various companies and branches of work where the rules have been endangered.

These are examples of rules which the code makes the writing industry follow:

Accuracy - The Press must take care not to publish inaccurate, misleading or distorted information or images, including headlines not supported by the text.

Privacy - Everyone is entitled to respect for his or her private and family life, home, health and correspondence, including digital communications.

Harassment - Journalists must not engage in intimidation, harassment or persistent pursuit.

Intrusion into grief or shock - In cases involving personal grief or shock, inquiries and approaches must be made with sympathy and discretion and publication handled sensitively.

Children - Children under 16 must not be interviewed or photographed on issues involving their own or another child’s welfare unless a custodial parent or similarly responsible adult consents.

Children in sex cases - The press must not, even if legally free to do so, identify children under 16 who are victims or witnesses in cases involving sex offences.

Clandestine devices and subterfuge - The press must not seek to obtain or publish material acquired by using hidden cameras or clandestine listening devices; or by intercepting private or mobile telephone calls, messages or emails; or by the unauthorized removal of documents or photographs; or by accessing digitally-held information without consent.

The following regulations may affect my magazine in reference to the target audience as articles stated within my magazine may go against the ages of my audience for example, information accessed  may contain material which is not appropriate for young adults to read or listen to as well as interviews or articles containing misleading information which hasn't come from a first person source this can encourage the audience to take advice or talk about things which isn't true - mainly gossip which can be interpreted as false and continue to be supported as the truth. However within my magazine, there are signs of privacy being used correctly as everyone within my magazine are entitled to respect over their private life and correspondence including digital communications. At any point within my magazine there is no sign of harassment against the music artists and my magazine does not engage in intimidation, harassment or persistent pursuit. This affects my target audience positively as they do not get mislead about the content within my magazine and assume that the code of harassment has been crossed and followed incorrectly. My audience target is the center of my magazine as everything which is contained within my magazine follows the rules of the codes that protect my target audience from anything which can exploit their innocence or privacy.
